Marsh Crane fly

Tipula oleracea

Description:

Native to Europe - Introduced to North America around 1998, most likely from infested soil media. The European crane fly is considered a serious pest of turf and other plants in Europe. The larvae, known as leatherjackets, can be problematic in any grass-based system. Its impact in North America is still being evaluated, but is regarded as a serious pest in lawns, pastures & hay fields. They are dependent on moist soil conditions, and survival is favored by mild winters and wet, cool summers.

Habitat:

Worldwide; gardens, pastures, meadows, usually beneath turf. Areas with thatch buildup and poor drainage.
