Now I wish I'd picked some. I was out after hedgehogs, mind you and got myself a nice haul. But still..... Maybe I'll go back Saturday. We're supposed to have a break in the weather
Looks like it. They vary quite a bit, but those scales in the center, the ring, the white gills, and the dark lower stem are characteristic--as well as growing on wood.

Yes, it is the honey fungus, but I would suggest Armillaria tabescens, because of the thick stem and darker shade color.
