Tiger Cowries

Cypraea tigris

Description:

Pair of large cowries ~ 3 inches long with white shell base, brown crown and black spots throughout.

Habitat:

Near shore tropical waters; coral reef ecosystem.

Notes:

Spotted in 30 feet of water off the reef runway at HNL. The mantle is clearly visible on the individual to the left in the image. Possibly Cypraea tigris var. schilderiana. I have seen this species up to four inches long. Original medium photoprint, subsequently scanned and image saved as digital file.

Blogie, thanks for the invitation, but I have decided to decline. I stopped diving about ten years ago, so I am unable to contribute anything new to your mission.
