Fossil whale tympanic bone

Description:

A fossil whale tympanic bone (one of three ear bones), approximately three inches (~3") in length. This specimen was collected at an undisclosed location along the Potomac River, Westmoreland County, Virginia USA. This type of fossil is more easily recognized by looking at the side shown facing up in Photo 1 of 2 rather than the side shown in Photo 2 of 2.

Habitat:

A relatively "shallow" sea that existed along the east coast of the United States an estimated 10- to 15 million years ago, during the Miocene Epoch. Related Resource: Miocene Marine Life http://paleobiology.si.edu/geotime/main/...
