Ophiocordyceps sinensis attackes caterpillar and does not control the host, could well be another but " Ophiocordyceps unilateralis " contolls his host. find it weird that 2 specimen of the same species are crawling on the same spot of all the leafs in the tree ---> when not to mating, then because it is the right spot ( conditions: sunlight, wind, height) to fruit. Very nice spot, cordyceps and victim can you see (here pn) often, but not like this !!
I just read an article on how aggressive the fungi are becoming and how they grow thru tiny animals and use them for dispersal.Very Scary. The host eventually dies.
Astonishing! My guess would be with S Frazier that this is some kind of fungus like Cordyceps that has fruited out of these two bugs. I know they're supposed to 'control' the host to climb to a good position from which they can shed their spores. Might explain why there are two like an almost perfect mirror image! Anyway, just hypothesising....and hoping for a more qualified opinion on what's really going on...
Could that be frass, like that other frass-covered bug that was on PN recently?
