Eastern Hornet Fly

Spilomyia longicornis

Description:

Spilomyia longicornis is a fly in the hoverfly family that mimics a hornet. It has a yellow-striped abdomen and its eyes have a wasp-like appearance.

Habitat:

Spotted on "common boneset" in a powerline right of way (see habitat pic 5) in Arkansas. Common in eastern North America.
