Picture #1- Soldier termites emerging from a foraging tunnel that I had broken open. Soldiers have large dark heads with a projecting snout. Tan body with white stripes. #2- Foraging tunnel. #3- Nest
Found on the trunk of a large tree. These nests are seen on many trees in the area.
Nests and foraging tunnels are built with feces and saliva. The worker caste consists of females and young males. Most males become soldiers. Soldiers have a frontal gland that can spray toxic secretions of sticky terpenes. An effective defense against ants. This is the most common of 18 species of termites in Puerto Rico.
