Mountain Gorilla

Gorilla beringei beringe

Description:

Rushegura Family Group, situated in the Buhoma region in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. I think this is Kabukojo, a blackback. https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3786/13098... http://www.bwindiforestnationalpark.com/... It was amazing how all the members of this family looked so different. They all had different personalities also, which could be seen during the hour we had to observe them.

Habitat:

tropical rainforest. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda.

Notes:

Gorilla tracking in Uganda now follows the way they have been doing it in Rwanda. There are 3 family groups of habituated gorillas in Bwindi, and a group of 12 people can visit one group for an hour, early in the morning. The rest of the day they are left alone. Every morning scouts go out and track the gorillas, then guides take a group of people to see them. The 'oldies and the weak' go to the closest group, and the adventurous types go to the furtherest group. It works well.

Gilma, they are gentle giants! I didn't feel threatened by them at all, even though they are huge.

And I believe you were the adventurous

Sound like a great set up, Pam. I love that last picture, but aren't they dangerous, it looks as if it could chase you... : o
