Acreichthys tomentosus
Also known as Bristle-tailed Leatherjacket, Filefish, Seagrass Filefish, Seagrass Leatherjacket, Matted Filefish, Matted Leatherjacket and Fantail. Color and pattern vary but usually has a dark V shaped marking on its mid-side. They feed on invertebrates and algae, and grow to a length of about 10cm.
Found singly on shallow coral reefs, sand flats and slopes with weedy patches. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.
It has a dorsal spike that it raises when it senses danger (see 3rd photo). The 4th photo shows the fish in an agitated state, fleeing away from the pesky cameraman.
