Soft Scale Insect

Phalacrococcus howertoni

Description:

These small inconspicuous insects were found all over locustberry plants, and ranged in sized from about 1mm to 5mm in length. They stay on the stems in large groups and take close inspection to recognize them as insects at all.

Habitat:

Preserved pine rocklands

Notes:

These medium sized ants were found everywhere the scales were found, but I did not observe any direct interaction. Neither seemed to respond to the other's presence. According to bugguide this species was just recognized in 2008. So close!
