Robin's eggshell

Turdus migratorius

An egg of a yearlong resident songbird. The eggshell's deeper/darker color reflects an evolutionary adaptation to absorb light in cooler climates with less light. Robin's eggs laid in hotter climates tend to be lighter colored.

Seen on a tree-lined lawn in a temperate region in the spring.
