Also read somewhere the yellow stripe that runs into the eye can also tell them apart, which in fantastic photos like yours is pretty easy to spot.Location too in some cases is a teller (in south America germanica is the common one)
OK, have done lot's of searching and the article in the wikipedia seems OK.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vespula_ger...they are told apart by the drawings on the forehead (which doesn't seem that consistent to me), but the spots on the abdomen tell the yellowjacket apart from the common wasp which has them fused to the lines.
