A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Artemisia frigida
Low, spreading shrublet that appears silvery-blue and reaches 18" in height. Early spring growth is a matlike blue-green cluster within a silver-gray background. Soft, silky-gray leaves finely divided into 3 or 5 segments. Yellowish flowers nestled among hairy leaf-like structures appear on seed stalks in August; seeds mature in September.
This drought resistant plant likes dry, porous soils; common on the plains.
"Fringed" sage has a characteristic sage aroma and is very bitter to the taste. Native Americans used this plant to eliminate the greasy odor from dried meat. An important food source for wildlife.
