creosote

Larrea tridentata

Description:

This bush forms rings as it grows older, and a ring called King Clone in California in nearly 12,000 years old. Another cool fact: if you cup the live leaves in your hands and blow on them, the moisture from your breath will cause to release a smokey, acrid scent.

Habitat:

Well-drained desert soils. Chemicals released from the roots inhibit the growth of other plants.
