Tulip Snail

Fasciolaria tulipa

Description:

Tulip shell is the common name for these predatory, subtropical and tropical sea snails. They are marine gastropod mollusks in the family Fasciolariidae. The word "tulip" describes the overall shape of the shells of these species, which is like that of a closed tulip flower.

Habitat:

This species range is from the North Carolina coast all the way south and west to the Gulf coast of Texas. They are also found in the West Indies and Brazil. They can usually be found in sand flats and sea-grass beds.

Notes:

This one was spotted on an exposed sandbar at low tide on Fort Myers Beach, Florida.
