Phoenicopterus chilensis
The Chilean flamingo is a large species of flamingo at 110–130 cm. In these photos 2 flamingos are seen: an immature one (the most pinkish one of the two) and a juvenile (the greyest one). Juveniles are easily recognised by their grey feathers, but with immature birds it's a bit more tricky. With fully grown adults, you generally don't see the black feathers with the wings folded. Chilean Flamingos feed upon aquatic invertebrates, diatoms and algae. They mainly feed during the day and they sweep their bill upside down through shallow water picking up food as they go. They are filter feeders and their tongue pumps up and down, 5 - 6 times per second, pushing the water out of their beak.
