Brown and white mollusk in similarly colored shell ~ 3 inches long moving across a coarse sand bottom.
Near shore tropical waters; coral reef ecosystem.
Spotted in about 55 feet of water at "5-inch reef" off of Leeward Oahu. Empty shells of this species, often occupied by a hermit crab, are common, but because this animal normally buries itself completely in sand during daylight, emerging only at night to feed, seeing a live specimen on a day dive is uncommon, if not rare. Original medium 35mm slide taken with Nikonos V and flash; film later scanned and image saved as digital file; unfortunately, focus is slightly off.
