A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Thamnophis atratus atratus
The most range-restricted subspecies of the aquatic garter snake, being found only in a small area of California from the south San Francisco Bay Area to the northern edge of Monterey Bay. Like all aquatic garter snakes, this subspecies is never found far away from water and can spend a large amount of time underwater. They feed on mostly small amphibians and occasional fish.
Only pictures I got of the elusive snake were those as it slithered away into the cattails.
