Giant Dock Spider

Description:

This spider was perching just outside my house, on the deck. I decided to take some pictures, as it scuttled to a rock, enjoy. The females of D. tenebrosus often are seen carrying a sac around August.(They can triple clutch from the same sperm injection from the 1 male) Ironically called the Dock Spider, these guys can be found further inland away from a water source, near a place such as your deck, shed, or garage. Any environment that supplies insects on a good timely basis is usually suitable, as these guys are highly adaptable. As these are adaptable, the spiders have been seen laying on the surface of the water, catching other things that are not insects such as small fish or frogs.

Notes:

The sac count goes from 100-400 depending on which sac. Usually the first sac laid has the most sling count.
