Oak Seedling

Quercus spp.

Description:

Oak seedling growing out of the side of a decaying oak trunk.

Habitat:

Mixed forest.

Notes:

Pileated woodpeckers, Dryocopus pileatus, had riddled this dead tree with holes seeking insects. Perhaps a squirrel hid it there. This hole was several inches deep.
