Description:

Apis mellifera occurs across Europe, Asia, and Africa in 28 subspecies. It was introduced to North America in the 1600s. Wild populations occur throughout Missouri. It is an important pollinator species which is currently experiencing a worrisome "colony collapse disorder".

Habitat:

These bees were observed on butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) growing in an untended verge between a parking lot and a vacant lot.
