Mourning Cloak

Nymphalis antiopa

Description:

this butterfly was found in my part-sun garden in our wooded yard on a small lake in minnesota; it seemed drawn to the oranges i put our for the orioles, and looked like it was actually feeding on them (or trying to...do they do this?)

Hi bejoubum, and welcome to Project Noah! This is a great series! To answer your question many butterflies eat fruit, by piercing the fruit's skin and draining juices from inside. Others drink the juices from the surface of rotting fruit. Butterflies that prefer to drink from fresh fruit have a pointed proboscis, making it easier to puncture the fruit's skin.
