Yellowstriped Oakworm

Anisota peigleri

Description:

This black and yellow caterpillar will become a reddish-orange day-flying moth. The larvae mainly feed on various oak species. My kids found this caterpillar on the ground, likely seeking out a place to pupate as it is late in the season and fully-grown caterpillars pupate and overwinter in shallow underground chambers.

Habitat:

Found from south-eastern Kentucky, south-western Virginia, eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina south through western South Carolina and central Georgia into north-central Florida.

Notes:

Spotted on the ground of a suburban yard in Marietta, GA
