•They eat insects, their larvae and eggs, fruits, berries and nectar. •They make nests in holes that they make in trees or in tree anthills. •Only the males have red feathers in the face.

Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical and tropical dry shrubland, heavily degraded former forests, cerrado, caatinga -I saw this woodpecker in Itaipava (RJ, Brazil)
