Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

Medium-sized hawk averaging 1.5 - 3.5 pounds with a wing span between 3 and 5 feet.

Habitat:

Commonly found throughout Oklahoma. These birds like to take advantage of high lookout perches and are frequently seen along the side of roads sitting atop utility poles. This individual was found on the road inside a Boy Scout camp in Johnston County.

Notes:

One of the most common raptors in Oklahoma.
