Neotropic Cormorant

Phalacrocorax brasilianus

Notes:

Walking along a local marina we found a cormorant swimming in circles and moving it's head quickly from side to side. We came back to check on it a couple hours later and it was still exhibiting the same strange behavior. My brother and I took the canoe out and caught it pretty easily and took it to a local wildlife rehabilitation facility.

That's true. If it didn't have any noticeable damage to the head infection could be a possibility! Good thing you went back to check on him!

My first thought was botulism, I think the rehabber is giving it antibiotics tonight, I took video of the behavior so she could see what it was doing.

Poor guy! Almost sounds like it may have head trauma. (Hit by car or something) Thank you for doing the kind deed of picking him up and getting him somewhere safe and comfortable!
