Tortoise leaf beetle

(Poss.) Paropsis atomaria

Description:

Paropsis sp. Paropsine leaf beetle with fine dots over its elytra and bright orange/red color

Habitat:

On Eucalyptus among P. atomaria and P varicollis.

Notes:

Tortoise beetle #13 This look similar to P. atomaria (pic 4) but differs in the following way. 1/ Slightly smaller 2/ Lacking darker markings. 3/ Brighter orange/red elytra.

While atomaria is quite variable and sometimes has a red skirt http://www.flickr.com/photos/66925960@N0... It is also sometimes quite pale http://www.flickr.com/photos/66925960@N0... I suspect this is a different species again.

Excellent photos martin.
I like the markings halfway along the side of atomaria which sometimes look like a smiley face.
