Rhacodactylus ciliatus
Small stunning yellow-orange and brown Gecko.
Spotted in Biology class in California.
This is my teachers newest pet Coco. The Crested Gecko has hair-like projections found above the eyes, resembling eyelashes. It has a wedge shaped head and a crest that runs from each eye to the tail. The toes and the tip of the semi-prehensile tail are covered in small hairs called setae. Each seta is divided into hundreds of smaller hairs called spatulae. It is believed these structures exploit the weak van der Waals force to help the gecko climb on most solid surfaces. The toes have small claws which aid in climbing surfaces to which their toes cannot cling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crested_gec...).
What an amazing little Gecko - great pics too ! thanks for sharing the information..
Wonderful shot.. Coral.. I can see her beautiful eyebrows and eyelids... This spotting is really a learning...!!
I just recently got one of these as a pet from Petco, there are lots of other stores that have them too though. Mine has darker coloring and is very jumpy compared to this one. :)
Thanks! These animals are now sold as pets even after their near extinction like you said Cindy.
Wow, according to Wikipedia, "This species was thought extinct until it was rediscovered in 1994" in New Caledonia! Impressive your Biology class has this beauty!
