Red lobster (Colombia)

Centropogon sp.

Description:

This flower was photographed in a walk that goes from the municipality in Cundinamarca Bojacá to the national highway leading to the municipality of Cundinamarca La Mesa, near San Antonio del Tequendama. The walk is known as "The Waterfall Bojacá." Most travel is done by cloud forest with giant trees and many small rivers.

Congrats Alexander, a very well deserved Spotting of the Day for this incredible plant!

"What a spectacular species of Hanging Bellflower! Doesn't it look like lobster claws? All or some parts of the tropical tubular flowers are reported to be toxic."

Thanks to great work by Matti Nissalo for getting this to genus. Still haven't found a good match for this species yet though.
