Eastern Spadefoot

Scaphiopus holbrookii

Description:

Hundreds of tiny black tadpoles in clear water near the side of the road in a small stream. The body is quite oval but the tail is remarkably slim and short.

Habitat:

I spotted these tadpoles in a slow running stream by the side of the road. There were so many gathered by the edges where the current is weakest.

Notes:

I looked but could not find an adult of the species.
