Greta oto
A clearwing butterfly, the first picture is a male, exposing the feathery parts to disperse feromones
Open areas of the tropics
Thanks so much...Mayra, I have only see 2 times the feathery parts on the wings...
Seriously you probably need the native specimen, but personally I would never kill a butterfly just for an ID, there are already tons in boxes around. The glasswings are besides the skipper one of the trickiest to ID. And actually there are some criteria to follow: Red spot behind the head (is not Oto), now brown part at the apex (most upper part) of the forewing, but only a small darker margin (not Oto). Hindwing: if you take the first horizontal patch in shot #2 you go to the left or the right, respectively, and you see that there is no separation or additional vein going from this first patch adn there is no notch, the vein of this patch is rounded = Oto. In the link above you can see what I mean, I added a link of Ithomia patilla, which looks very similar besides these mentioned points. If you look at the white patch on the forewing (which is, depending on the light angle/flash use, not always perfectly visible as a bright wight patch/stripe): In Oto it is from one edge of the wing to the other and at the smaller part it is directly (!) at the margin, so no little space between. Look at Patilla, you see there a little space between stripe and margin. So, I think you should now see that this one is Oto ;-)... What do you think??

Thanks Bayucca, I am still working on the ID as I couldn´t count the cell parts in the hindwings, next time, I will catch one...WHAT did you see to be able to identify (I dont know enough about butterflies)
Thanks IgCostaNut
mae, another incredibly wonderful photo depicting the beauty of our little area of the world. Te felicito!!!
Absolutely fantastic picture! Never seen these feathery parts! I must admit I didn't even know how this would work or never thought about that. But I think it is Greta morgane oto.
