Unfortunately my spotting of this bird was interrupted by another spotter who did not know how to keep his cool. Luckily I was fast enough to take some pictures of the Common Merganser taking off.
Red-breasted Mergansers have a much less contrasting neck and breast, the crests are shaggier, and they usually lack the conspicuous white chin that this bird shows. See this photo, it shows a Common in the front and a Red-breasted in the back: http://www.columbiariverimages.com/Birds...
