Indian Blanket

Gaillardia pulchella

Description:

Common wildflower in Oklahoma is, in fact, the state flower. The inflorescences are bright orange to red with bright yellow outer rim.

Habitat:

This hardy flower thrives in sandy, well-drained soils. At Camp Simpson, these are found in shallow soils on limestone hills.

Notes:

The Indian Blanket has been cultivated along Oklahoma highways, and is a showcase wildflower. Hardiness in hot, dry climate make it a natural choice for highway medians and right-of-ways.
