Luzon Sea Star

Echinaster luzonicus

Description:

Also known as Luzon Starfish, Orange Sea Star, Orange Starfish, Orange Luzon Sea Star and Orange Luzon Starfish. Colors vary from place to place, hence the "orange" in alternate names of this sea star. They feed on molluscs, worms and detritus, and grow to about 15cm in width.

Habitat:

Found singly or in groups in shallow lagoons and bays on sand and rubble areas, at depths of 2 to 15m. Widespread in the West Pacific.

Notes:

This starfish is pretty common in shallower waters around these parts. This particular specimen I spotted at a depth of less than 30 feet, off the northern coast of Talikud Is., Samal, Philippines.
