Opossum

Didelphis virginiana

Description:

Oklahoma's only marsupial mammal. Has highly developed prehensile tail.

Habitat:

Found in wooded areas throughout the state.

Notes:

First of all, the "O" is silent. The correct pronunciation is "Possum"! These nocturnal animals are frequently spotted in automobile headlights, slowly ambling along the side of the road after dark. Opossums are opportunistic feeders, eating fruits, berries, roots, insects, earthworms, and small mammals.
