Asian elephant

Elephas maximus

Description:

The largest land mammals of Asia, Asian elephants are the only species in the genus Elephas. Asian elephants are typically smaller than African elephants.

Habitat:

Grasslands, tropical evergreen forest, semi-evergreen forest, moist deciduous forest, dry deciduous forested and dry thorn forest, in addition to cultivated and secondary forests and scrublands.

One of two Asian elephants at the Buttonwood Park and Zoo in New Bedford, MA.
