Spermophilus lateralis
Small furry, brown front quarters, grey black and white striped hind quarters, furry tail.
Wooded area of Inyo, Mount Whitney Portal, Lone Pine, CA (Sierra Nevadas)
Not afraid of people, aggressively goes after unattended tables and food sources. If there is one in sight, there are many near by.
Yes it is outside the Eastern's range, and no stripes on the face. The golden mantled ground squirrel is right for the location and images. So neither a marmot or a chipmunk.
This is outside of the Eastern chipmunk's usual range but it lacks the striped face that all the californian chipmunk species typically have. http://creagrus.home.montereybay.com/chi... Possibly a hybrid?
We thought it was pretty funny when we saw it. We named the picture, "Lunch?" and figured the viewer could take it which ever way they wanted.
