Giant Manta

Manta birostris

Black to dark gray on back, white on belly. Two movable, paddle-like cephalic fins on the head, whiplike tail. Upto 6.7 metres. Remoras often attached to body.

Islas Catalinas is a popular manta spotting site, normally near surface till about 6 metres depth. In Eastern Pacific found from California till Ecuador.

Normally ignores divers or moves away - this one allowed me to swim with him/her for several minutes, during the 3 minutes safety stop before surfacing at the end of the dive.
