Description:

Common Names: Tropical Buckeye, Caribbean Buckeye, Pavo Real. The Tropical Buckeye's large eye-spots are a defense against predators, mainly birds.

Habitat:

Range: Southern New Mexico, southern Arizona, South Texas, and southern Florida south through the West Indies, Mexico, and Central America to Argentina. Open tropical lowlands including fields, brush, sandy islands. Host Plants: Twintips (Stemodia), Lippia, Wild Petunia (Ruellia), Porterweed (Stachytarpheta).

Notes:

The majority of the butterfly species spotted along the coast were quite ragged.
