Chit Palm

Thrinax radiata

Common Names: Chit Palm, Florida Thatch Palm. Native to: Southern Florida, Mexico, Central America. The Chit Palm is a slow growing palm that produces white flowers that grow on a series of yellow stems. Flowers are followed by green round fruit (image 2) that turns white when it is ripe. The Chit palm is listed as endangered in both Florida and the Yucatan. These palms thrive in a very narrow area off coastal waters and have been endangered due to habitat destruction, mostly from beach front real estate development.
