Bumblebee weed

Prunella vulgaris

Description:

A herbaceous plant about 150mm in height with soft green stems with opposite arrangement of leaves. Flowers are like mini purple snapdragons arranged in a short and thick inflorescence.

Habitat:

Open forests, grasslands and gardens

Notes:

A very common "weed" but has pretty flowers on thick flower stalks making them look like bee hives. This plant has also been known as "heal all" because of its medicinal properties and use by sailors of yore ! - all in the web link

Christine, thanks for your comment. I had not heard anything about this little "weed" but it's everywhere and now I am pleased I put it up as a spotting - I find that others know a lot more about this plant and probably have used it as well !!
