Green Horsefly

Chlorotabanus sp.

Description:

This fly was about 5/8" long. He came to rest near a street ligt and began to clean his head. He could turn his head at least 300 degrees! It has light green to white coloration and a huge probing device for sucking.

Habitat:

Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica 8 weeks into the 6 month dry season.

Thanks Cindy. This fly had a really bright green tail. It wasn't fluorescent but bright. However, the colors were somehow muted by the light spectrum of the H.I.D. streetlight.
