Chinchemolle, Chirindango

Description:

This is a big wingless insect, about 100mm. This specimen was a female, and belongs to the Phasmida group, like the stick insects. The Agathemera genus eat plants, ans the specific kind they eat at hatching, not othe for all their lives, so it's very hard to take them in to captivity.

Es un insecto sin alas de buen tamaño, este ejemplar tenía al rededor de 100 mm. Y al parecer era una hembra, por su forma y tamaño. Pertenece al mismo gupo que los palotes (Phasmida). Los Agathemera comen lo mismo que aprenden a comer cuando nacen, no cambian el tipo de planta duante su vida, por lo que son realmente difíciles de llevar a cautiverio.

Habitat:

Cordillera Nevada, Cordón Caulle-Puyehue area, in the southern Andes. They live above the treeline, between the rocks and low srubs, they are supposed to survive one winter by hibernation.

Cordillera Nevada, o Cordón Caulle, sobre los 1000 msnm, sobre el límite del bosque, viven entre las rocas, entre arbustos pequeños, achaparrados y aparentemente pasan vivos el invierno bajo la nieve.

The next year I found other specimen, in the same area, but it was a male.

Al año siguiente encontré otro ejemplar en la misma zona, pero era un macho.

Edit: This year (2012) made another trip to the area, and managed to photograph about 20 specimens with a better camera, and is now clear to me that this is not Agathemera crassa, but most likely Agathemera elegans.

Nota: He cambiado la especie de este bicho, que originalmente había identificado como Agathemera crassa, pero este año (2012) volví a visitar la zona y logré sacar fotografías de aproximadamente unos 20 individuos y me ha quedado claro que no son Agathemera crassa, lo más probable es que sean Agathemera elegans.
