Oyster mushrooms

Pleurotus ostreatus

Description:

The oyster mushroom is a common edible mushroom. It was first cultivated in Germany as a subsistence measure during World War I and is now grown commercially around the world for food. Oyster mushrooms can also be used industrially for mycoremediation purposes. The oyster mushroom may be considered a medicinal mushroom, since it contains statins such as lovastatin which work to reduce cholesterol.

Habitat:

Mixed woodland.

When I suggested to Luc I might cook some of the honey mushrooms that were growing in our lawn he said that he was already dicing with death every time he eats my cooking! :)

I am thinking.it must be a great responsibility for the farmers to make sure that they are selling the right mushrooms as "edible"
i have seen people falling very sick from mushroom poisoning and also becoming sick by inhaling spores released from puff balls.

Emma I wish I was confident enough to taste some of the edible mushrooms I've found but knowing my luck I will get it wrong & poison myself!

great fact that it contains Statins to lower cholesterol. This mushroom does not look very old.
