Description:

The Sungrebe or American Finfoot (Heliornis fulica) is a bird which breeds in tropical Central and South America from southern Mexico to northeast Argentina and southern Brazil.

Habitat:

Seen swimmoing along the edge of the waterways in Tortuguero. Sungerbes are tropical birds of swamps and marshes.

Similar to a female Masked Duck but the bill shape looks wrong. You could also check Grebes and Divers (Loons). Our young Great Crested Grebe has similar head pattern, here is one of mine http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/860...
