Desert Cottontail

Sylvilagus audubonii

Description:

These rabbits have a white, rounded tail which gives them their name. Its fur is a light grayish brown with a white belly. Adults are 33 to 43 cm (13 to 17 in) long and weigh up to 1.5 kg (3.3 lb).

Habitat:

Unlike the eastern cottontail, the desert cottontail generally lives in arid grasslands and makes use of burrows. Adults are 33 to 43 cm (13 to 17 in) in length and weigh up to 1.5 kg (3.3 lb).

Notes:

This particular animal was found at the edge of a prairie dog town in Wind Cave National Park. I've seen these cottontails resting at the mouth of prairie dog burrows.
