Prickly Sculpin

Cottus asper

Description:

Black spot on first dorsal fin, body covered with varying number of prickles- there are several geographical races of this species, with the coastal form (pictured here) having no prickles; single pore underneath front of lower jaw. To 30 cm (12 inches) total length.

Habitat:

Found in freshwater, estuarine, and occasionally marine environments. The coastal form is often found in river estuaries, typically in shallow water over sandy substrates.

Notes:

Incidentally caught (and released) in the Fraser River estuary while fishing for salmonids. Size: 18 cm
