Sanguinaria canadensis

Description:

Plant with one leaf and one flower. Flower white; has 8-16 petals; may have up to twice the number of stamen as petals; overy is superior and is clearly visible above the petals. Flower blooms before leaf is fully developed; leaf is usually folded around the flower stem. Leaf develops quite quickly and is broadly circular with palmate lobes. The seed capsule is fusiform.

Habitat:

Growing in leaf litter on a ridge in a predominantly deciduous woods.
