@Argybee. Looks like it has been ID'd by NuwanChaturanga. Check out the movie I posted above. Seems like it was the caterpillar I thought it was that made the cocoon.

this is a cocoon of lappet moth but i couldn't find any links to prove it

Argybee, it's soft and flexible, sort of like felt. Several of them are now empty, the 'bird' having flown. They leave by splitting it open on one end. Inside is a hard sort of chrysalis shell. I'll dissect one, take a photo, and post it. This one I posted seems to still be in tact.
