Mottled piculet

Picumnus nebulosus

Description:

With a length of about 10cm, the Mottled piculet (Picumnus nebulosus) is one of the smallest woodpeckers in Uruguay. Only the White-barred piculet (Picumnus cirratus) is slightly smaller with 9cm, but it can only be found along the Argentinian border. The male has a red crown and can easily be distinguished from the female.

Habitat:

It is found in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It is becoming rare due to habitat loss. They forage along thin branches and bamboo, either alone or in pairs.
